Beat the Heat, Williams Arizona
A great getaway from our Las Vegas heat!

Our beat the heat series will feature summer getaways that are in close proximity to Las Vegas and will give you a break from our typical triple digits. This week our featured getaway is Williams, Arizona.

Williams, AZ is one of my favorite towns and is known as the gateway to the Grand Canyon. It is located in Northern Arizona and lies on Historic route 66. Williams elevation is at 6800 ft, which provides cooler temperatures in the summer. Average highs are 82 degrees with lows in the 50’s. From Las Vegas, Williams is 216 miles away and takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours by car.
Williams, Arizona is a charming town nestled at the base of the Bill Williams Mountains in one of the largest Ponderosa Pine Forests in the world. Enjoy the beauty of this mountainside town situated on the best-preserved stretch of Route 66. A true Western setting offering visitors a friendly atmosphere with plenty to do.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast you can enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, boating, mountain biking, horseback riding and off road adventures.

In town there are an abundance of shops, restaurants, motels and even real cowboy action! Hotels range from affordable chains to bed and breakfasts. I recently stayed at the newly renovated Rodeway Inn and I highly recommend it. It was beautifully remodeled in addition within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants. Williams offers shoppers a unique variety of stores featuring western goods, custom leather, Indian art and crafts, jewelry, collectibles and plenty of Route 66 souvenirs. There are also a couple of art galleries and a visitor center.

Just minutes from Main Street lies Bearizona. Bearizona is a drive-thru wildlife park that offers a once in a lifetime experience. This wildlife park boasts 160 acres with a three mile drive through the Ponderosa Pine Forest where you will see many animals in their natural habitat. More animals are exhibited in Fort Bearizona, a beautiful 20 acre walk-thru area, along winding paths which is more of a “zoo” type setting. The best part of my trip to Bearizona was watching the bear cubs at play. The habitat is huge and the cubs were super active and playful during our visit. I would highly recommend a visit to Bearizona.

Williams is named the gateway to the Grand Canyon, it is a short 58 miles away from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Visitors have the option of taking the Grand Canyon Railway which provides a scenic journey to the Grand Canyon aboard a century old steam-powered rail line. The train ride takes approximately 2.5 hours. The guides aboard the train will offer a lot of colorful history about the area and will have plenty of information to offer about the Grand Canyon. Depending on what kind of ticket you purchase travelers can enjoy snacks, full bar service and even a mock train robbery for added entertainment. By car the Grand Canyon is one hour away and there is ample parking and shuttles once you arrive.
In conclusion, Williams is an extraordinary and memorable experience. You will certainly beat the heat. There is so much to see and do. If you have extra time you can visit Sedona, Flagstaff and Jerome. They are all a short drive away.
