A Brief Overview About Our School System
Clark County School District is the fifth largest school district in the United States and serves all of Clark County. The district serves: Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Laughlin, Mesquite and all of the small towns on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Clark County School District has 300,000+ students and employees more than 35,000 employees. There are 377 schools and 13 state sponsored charter schools. CCSD schools are broken down into seven regions. Five are based on geography (east, northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest) while the remaining two regions are designated superintendent’s schools and education services division.

The majority of the schools in the district run on a 9 month schedule from late August to early June. There are a few year round schools. Clark County School District closes for the following: Labor Day, Nevada Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Presidents’ Day, and Memorial Day). District-wide winter and spring breaks fall over Christmas and Easter. There are also staff development days throughout the school year that students will have off.
Full day kindergarten is offered at 128 of the county’s elementary schools. Of there, 76 are state-funded, 42 are tuition-based, and 10 receive funding from other sources. Make sure you check to see if your zoning provides tuition free kindergarten as it can cost parents $3000.00 for the tuition based programs.
Clark County Schools offer students an array of activities from sports to academic interest groups and clubs. There are programs for the academically gifted as well as programs for those students that may need some extra help. Clark County School District offers magnet schools, online learning (home schooling) and transportation for those students living more than two miles from their assigned school. Public schools in Clark County are organized into zones that determine what school a student will attend, and a student’s assigned zone is determined by where his or her parents reside. Clark County has consistently scored low in nation wide polls for several issues including high drop out rates and low academic scoring. Although these figures are not encouraging, there are some great schools in our county. There are many websites available that have school rankings and parent reviews. In 2013 Newsweek and the Daily Beast ranked the best schools in the entire nation and the following local schools made the list.
• Coronado High School is ranked 1,670th in the nation and 10th in Nevada.
The comprehensive high school in Henderson has an 89 percent graduation rate and an 80 percent college-going rate. Coronado also posted an average SAT score of 1535, an average ACT score of 23.4 and an average AP score of 3.
About 15 percent of students participate in the federal free and reduced-price lunch program.
• Palo Verde High School is ranked 1,951st in the nation and 11th in Nevada.
The comprehensive high school in Las Vegas has an 82 percent graduation rate and a 74 percent college-going rate. Palo Verde also posted an average SAT score of 1550, an average ACT score of 24 and an average AP score of 3.1.
About 24 percent of students participate in the federal free and reduced-price lunch program.
• Foothill High School is ranked 1,976th in the nation and 12th in Nevada.
The comprehensive high school in Henderson has a 77 percent graduation rate and an 80 percent college-going rate. Foothill also posted an average SAT score of 1676, an average ACT score of 22.6 and an average AP score of 3.
