Lake Mead National Recreational Area
Lake Mead National Recreational Area is located in Nevada on the Colorado River, about 25 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. The Lake Mead Reservoir provides water to Arizona, California, Nevada and to parts of Mexico. Although the water levels have significantly receded over the years, Lake Mead is still one of the largest man made lakes in the world. Lake Mead Recreational Area offers 1.5 million acres for visitors to explore and enjoy. There are marinas, restaurants, shops and other amenities throughout the park.
Lake Mead Activities and Things to do!
Lake Mead offers visitors and locals an abundance of outdoor activities. Boating, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, camping, hiking, biking and scenic drives are just the beginning! As you move throughout the park the landscape changes before your very eyes. From bright red formations to desert as far as your eye can see you will enjoy the view. You can take a tour of the historic Hoover Dam, enjoy a boat tour or take your bike on a 7 mile journey through the old historic railroad tunnels with amazing views. There are over 900 camping and RV sites at 15 different locations. Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s campgrounds offer restrooms, running water, dump stations, grills, picnic tables and shade. Some of the sites have hookups!
Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam started construction in 1931 and opened in 1936. Hoover Dam stands an impressive 726 feet high and is an incredible 660 feet wide at its base. The Bureau of Reclamation offers tours of the famous Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam is open to the public daily from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The visitor center is open until 5:00 p.m. They offer self guided tours, guided tours and powerplant tours. Be sure to check out the Hoover Dam bridge walkway, where you get to experience walking over the bridge and marvel at the pure epic size of this dam.
Boat Tours
Lake Mead Cruises offer passengers a fun way to explore the lake and take in all of the spectacular views and sites from the comfort of a paddle wheel ferry. They offer sightseeing cruises, champagne brunch cruises as well as dinner cruises. Passengers will love the super colorful landscapes and epic, panoramic views. They introduce you to several landmarks including: Fortification Hill (an extinct volcano), the Arizona Paint Pots, and the majestic Hoover Dam.
